CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT: Exercise extreme care when opening email links or attachments
You may have seen recent news regarding the WannaCry ransomware virus. This virus is expected to have significant impact in the coming days.
Protect your data by:
- Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments or emails from people you don’t know or companies you don’t do business with
- Ensure you have smart screen (in Internet Explorer) turned on, which helps identify reported phishing and malware websites and helps you make informed decisions about downloads
- Ensure that the pop-up blocker is running on your web browser
- If you save documents to your local computer, regularly backup your important files. For those clients who do not use Xcentric Managed Security Services:
- Make sure your Windows Operating System is up-to-date
- Make sure your Windows Server Operating Systems are up-to-date
- Xcentric has performed the necessary updates to Xcentric Cloud-based servers and all of workstations managed under the Managed Security Services (aka. Managed Workstation Service).
Stop Turning Wrenches, Turn Up Value
How will you show your value to your firm as an IT person?
Keeping the servers going? Making sure the backups are working? How about making sure you are legal on licensing?
All of these things are important but are they valued or commoditized? We both know the answer to this but unfortunately it’s those things that take up most of your time.
How about engaging various technology vendors to save 8% on your IT budget? What about rolling out a learning management system to better facilitate training and CPE tracking? What about connecting siloed data via APIs or figuring out a better way to get reports out of your practice system? (more…)

Xcentric Completes Another SOC Audit
We have completed our SOC audit for this year, verifying our adherence to security standards and policies. We’re excited to have achieved a favorable report from the auditor.
“Maintaining an environment that can withstand the scrutiny of a SOC2 audit each year is a formidable task shared by every team member at Xcentric and one we take very seriously. Enough so that we have a third-party review and strengthen our policies and audit how effectively we manage to them. I’m pleased to say that we have completed another annual SOC audit successfully, and it’s very gratifying to see the validation of the hard work and diligence of the Xcentric team in following our controls.” – Bob Cross, Director of Technology (more…)
Welcome to the New Xcentric Cloud Portal
We are pleased to announce the release of our latest Cloud Portal. Over the last fifteen years, we have been fine-tuning this custom platform around one simple idea…technology is hard – how can we make it easier for CPAs? It’s pretty amazing to consider the complexity of what transpires when a person launches an application over the Internet. We won’t get into all of the technical pieces, but you can imagine one must consider security, data storage, application configuration and server optimization, bandwidth, backups, and much much more.
With this latest version of the Cloud Portal, we have taken another step towards simplifying the complex. This starts out with the new look and feel but has been woven into the entire user experience. (more…)
Post Tax Season Priorities…New Products in the Store
While you all have been hard at work during tax season, we’ve updated the products in the Xcentric Store to offer our customers the latest and most CPA-compatible products on the market. Overall, there won’t be much of a noticeable difference on the buyer’s end, but we’ve also changed a couple of things in our backend to make the ordering process a little faster.
A couple of new products to mention:
Whew…Another Tax Season Is Behind Us!
First, let me say, congrats for surviving another tax season. We’re excited about the prospect of you getting some well-deserved rest and time away.
As we all know, kickoff to tax season was tough for the entire accounting profession. We worked together to adopt the changes made by the tax vendors that were required by the late, but necessary, newly minted IRS standards. Though painful for us all, the tax application authentication enhancements were long overdue and worked to close a vulnerability that hackers have increasingly exploited in recent years. For the full scoop on why the changes were made, check out the IRS page that explains it all. (more…)
Atlanta Bridge Collapse = More Xcentric Employees Working Remotely
News of the Atlanta I-85 bridge collapse is pretty widespread across the country. To summarize quickly for those who have not heard about it, an accidental fire started under one of the major Atlanta interstate bridges two weeks ago. This resulted in a section of the bridge collapsing in only a few hours. This incident has caused one of Atlanta’s busiest interstate sections to close until the bridge can be repaired. Current estimates are indicating that the bridge won’t be completed until mid-June.
Before the fire, Atlanta’s traffic was already horrific. According to the INRIX’s 2016 Global Traffic Scorecard ranking, Atlanta has the 4th most traffic of any city in North America and ranks as 9th in the world. Needless to say, commuting for professionals, parents, and students has gone from being a daily pain to a quality of life nightmare. (more…)
